Kinesiotaping

Flexible, latex-free therapeutic taping that supports muscles and joints while maintaining full range of motion during activity.

What Is Kinesiotaping?

Kinesiotaping is a therapeutic taping technique that uses flexible, elastic adhesive tape applied to the skin over muscles, joints, and connective tissue. Unlike rigid athletic tape that restricts movement, kinesiology tape is designed to move with your body — providing support, pain relief, and improved muscle function while maintaining full range of motion.

At SF Custom Chiropractic, we use RockTape — a premium kinesiology tape known for its superior adhesion, flexibility, and latex-free composition. Our providers are trained in advanced taping applications that go beyond basic muscle support to include lymphatic drainage patterns, postural correction, and sport-specific performance enhancement.

How Kinesiotaping Works

Kinesiology tape works through several physiological mechanisms:

Muscle Facilitation and Inhibition

Depending on the direction and tension of application, kinesiotape can either facilitate (activate) or inhibit (relax) targeted muscles. When applied from origin to insertion with stretch, the tape stimulates muscle contraction. When applied from insertion to origin, it reduces excessive muscle firing. This allows your provider to selectively enhance or calm specific muscles based on your treatment needs.

Pain Reduction (Gate Control)

The tape’s gentle lift on the skin activates mechanoreceptors — touch and pressure sensors — that send signals to the brain faster than pain signals travel. This “gate control” mechanism effectively reduces the perception of pain in the taped area without medication or restriction.

Decompression and Improved Circulation

The elastic recoil of kinesiotape creates microscopic convolutions (wrinkles) in the skin that lift the tissue slightly. This decompression creates space in the superficial tissue layers, promoting improved blood flow, lymphatic drainage, and reduced swelling. The tape essentially creates channels for fluid movement beneath the skin.

Proprioceptive Feedback

The constant sensory input from the tape on your skin enhances body awareness (proprioception) of the taped area. This improved awareness helps you maintain better posture, use correct movement patterns, and avoid positions that aggravate your condition.

Common Applications

Kinesiotaping is versatile and effective for a wide range of conditions:

  • Shoulder instability — supporting the rotator cuff during overhead activities
  • Knee pain — patellar tracking issues, patellofemoral syndrome, mild instability
  • Plantar fasciitis — arch support and heel pain relief
  • Achilles tendinitis — reducing strain on the Achilles tendon
  • Low back pain — postural support and muscle facilitation
  • Neck pain and tension — upper trapezius inhibition for desk workers
  • Swelling and edema — lymphatic drainage patterns for post-injury or post-surgical swelling
  • Postural correction — scapular retraction taping for forward-shoulder posture
  • Pregnancy-related pain — belly support and sacroiliac joint stabilization
  • Athletic performance — muscle facilitation taping for competition

What to Expect

Kinesiotaping is typically applied at the end of a treatment session, after chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue work have been performed. Your provider will clean the skin, select the appropriate tape width and cut pattern, and apply the tape with specific tension based on the desired therapeutic effect.

The tape is designed to stay on for 3-5 days, even through showering, swimming, and exercise. It is waterproof and breathable. When it is time to remove the tape, apply oil to the edges and peel slowly in the direction of hair growth to minimize skin irritation.

You should feel a gentle support and increased awareness of the taped area. The tape should not restrict your movement, cause numbness, or create significant discomfort. If you experience any of these, contact our office for guidance.

RockTape: Why We Choose It

We use RockTape at SF Custom Chiropractic for several reasons:

  • Latex-free — safe for patients with latex allergies
  • Superior adhesion — stays on during intense activity and water exposure
  • 180% stretch — more elastic than many competitor products for better tissue lift
  • Hypoallergenic adhesive — minimizes skin reactions
  • Consistent quality — reliable performance across all applications

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I shower and exercise with the tape on? Yes. RockTape is waterproof and designed to withstand sweating, swimming, and showering. Pat it dry after water exposure rather than rubbing.

How long does the tape last? Kinesiotape typically stays on for 3-5 days. If the edges begin to peel, you can trim them with scissors to extend the application.

Does removing the tape hurt? Applying baby oil or coconut oil to the tape edges 10 minutes before removal makes the process painless. Peel slowly in the direction of hair growth.

Can I apply kinesiotape myself? Some simple applications can be self-applied, but therapeutic taping for specific conditions is best performed by a trained provider who can assess the appropriate tension, direction, and pattern for your needs.

Is kinesiotaping covered by insurance? Taping may be included as part of your overall chiropractic treatment visit. Contact our office to verify your specific coverage.
